English

Introduction

Iranian rural settlements have faced an unprecedented convergence of environmental, economic, and social challenges in recent decades. Climate change, prolonged droughts, devastating floods, earthquakes, and livelihood crises have clearly revealed the vulnerability of these communities. Although rural populations possess rich indigenous knowledge and historical experience in facing hardships, the complexity and multiplicity of contemporary pressures have seriously challenged their resilience. Meanwhile, social capital, as an invisible yet vital resource, provides a foundation for collective cooperation, resource mobilization, and coordinated responses to crises. Social capital encompasses networks of trust, participatory norms, and reciprocal relationships that facilitate collective action. Given the pivotal role of this capital in strengthening social resilience, the present study aimed to conduct a quantitative meta-analysis of studies conducted between 2016 and 2025, systematically examining the impact of social capital and its dimensions on the social resilience of Iranian rural settlements.

Methodology

This research employed quantitative meta-analysis, which allows for the quantitative synthesis of findings from independent studies and the calculation of overall effect sizes. The statistical population comprised all studies published in reputable Iranian databases (Magiran, Normagz, SID, and the Institute for Humanities and Cultural Studies) between 2016 and 2025. Using purposive and systematic sampling based on inclusion criteria—relevance to the topic, availability of extractable quantitative data (correlation coefficients, effect sizes, or p-values), and publication within the specified timeframe—37 scientific documents were selected as the final sample. Extracted data were analyzed using CMA (Comprehensive Meta-Analysis) software with a Random Effects Model. The random effects model was chosen due to inherent heterogeneity among studies (differences in statistical populations, geographical regions, and methodologies).

Results and Discussion

Descriptive findings indicated that 68.6% of studies focused on rural households, with Sistan-and-Baluchestan and Kermanshah provinces having the highest frequency of research. Regarding ethnicity, Fars (37.1%), Kurd (17.1%), and Baluch (11.4%) communities received the most attention from researchers.

The meta-analysis results revealed a positive and significant relationship between social capital and social resilience in rural settlements. The overall effect size of social capital on resilience, based on the random effects model, was calculated as 0.43 (p<0.001, Z=8.45), which, according to Cohen's criteria, constitutes a moderate and significant effect. This finding aligns with studies by Patrick and Mburu (2024), Wisaw and Aldrich (2025), and Stroeb et al. (2024), emphasizing that communities with richer social capital have a higher capacity to cope with crises and recover from them.

Examining the three dimensions of social capital revealed:

• Linking Social Capital (vertical relationships with formal institutions) had the strongest predictive power for resilience, with an effect size of 0.48 (p<0.001). This finding highlights the importance of effective connections between villagers and government agencies, NGOs, and service centers in accessing immediate aid and participating in policy decisions.

• Bonding Social Capital (intra-group networks such as family and neighbors) ranked second with an effect size of 0.42 (p<0.001), indicating the role of these networks as emotional and supportive shields during crises.

• Bridging Social Capital (inter-group connections with other communities and social strata) showed a positive but smaller effect of 0.36 (p<0.002), which may stem from weak intermediary institutions and limited cross-local cooperation in the Iranian rural context.

Analysis of the constituent components of social capital showed that social trust, with an effect size of 0.51 (p<0.001), was the strongest component influencing resilience. This was followed by social cohesion (0.47), social support (0.44), perceived social justice (0.40), and collective participatory culture (0.39), respectively. Even components with smaller effect sizes, such as place attachment (0.28) and social monitoring (0.31), significantly strengthened resilience. The strong effect of social trust confirms that in rural communities with high interpersonal and institutional trust, willingness for immediate cooperation during crises, equitable resource distribution, and sustainability in collective decision-making increase significantly.

Conclusion

This meta-analysis of 37 studies confirmed the positive and significant impact of social capital on the social resilience of Iranian rural settlements. The overall effect size of 0.43 indicates that social capital can explain a considerable portion of the variance in resilience within rural communities. The most prominent finding is the pivotal role of linking social capital and social trust as the strongest predictors of resilience, revealing the necessity for policymakers to focus on facilitating effective communication between formal institutions and local communities. Rural resilience is not solely dependent on physical infrastructure but is rooted in invisible social structures. Accordingly, investing in strengthening social networks, public trust, and participatory institutions can sustainably enhance the capacity of rural communities to withstand future crises. Practical recommendations include establishing "Rural Resilience Councils," designing effective communication platforms between rural administrations and disaster relief agencies, strengthening bridging networks through NGOs, ensuring equity in emergency aid distribution, and developing community-based education to enhance social awareness.
